Hello! My name is Claudia and I teach reading at Woodward Academy Middle School. I am Dept. Chair and this marks my 22 year with WA.
Over the years, we have continued to look for new and different methods and resources for teaching and motivating students to read. We have held on to the “tried and true”, but I think our program today is very comprehensive and challenging for the college prep student.

The reading department adopted a new textbook this year, Elements of Literature, by HRW. Of course, we have everything at our fingertips online, even the text is offered online. It has been a very challenging commitment for our teachers, but I feel we are stepping things up for the students. The text has a code for students to access information online when working and reading at home. Assessment, power points, worksheets….all are available to students online. This is changing the face of the old reading class. At this point, I’m not sure they are becoming better readers than before, but they are being bombarded with bits of information from all sides in every subject area. At some point, we are hoping it all comes together.
Hopefully when you read this blog, you won’t think I’m totally off my rocker! There’s just something about sharing thoughts online…you don’t know who is out there reading it, if anyone! (of course, I know Shelley will read it!) …and I’m very tempted to speak my mind even if it makes no sense to anyone else!
So, welcome to my blog! You will see how my limited knowledge will get me into trouble at times, but I’m committed to learning this stuff! (web 2.0) I’m a repeat! I took the class last summer in ONE WEEK! Can you imagine doing this in ONE WEEK? Well, I did and I’m back for more….of the same! Cheers!
